[The movie character based on Facebook creator Mark] Zuckerberg is, in a way, a personification of Facebook. The character thinks of [his real-world friend] Eduardo in terms of “we should be friends because I need you for this thing, and you need me for this thing, and you like this band and I like this band…” in this very pragmatic way, and that’s what Facebook delivers. People are linked [only] through common circumstance or common interest rather than the more nuanced relationships you have with somebody in person. I think it’s precisely that socially narrow focus that allowed him to create something that so many people find so accessible.
