'Twas Ever Thus, Says Mr. Natural

For when somebody tells me a sort of truth, I find an arrogance there. He is edifying me, humiliating me, expects me to muster difficult arguments, without himself running any risks, since he considers his own truth unassailable. But solemn, sincere and touching though it is when someone states a prejudice, it is even more touching when it is justified, especially when it is in turn justified by other prejudices.
