DOCTOR [noun]: Always preceded by ‘the good’. Is a marvel while he enjoys your confidence, a fool as soon as you’ve fallen out. Are all materialists: ‘You can’t find the soul with a scalpel.’

Gustave Flaubert
Dictionary of Received Ideas (c. 1880)
